What Causes Rosacea?
It is unknown what causes rosacea. Some of the various theories contend that the disease is:
- A component of a larger blood disorder
- A problem with connective tissue under the skin
- An infection of the stomach
- Caused by skin bacteria or skin mites
- A fungus
- A function of psychological trouble
While no clear determination of the cause has been made, there are strong indications of who may be at risk for rosacea. Typically, rosacea sufferers are fair-skinned with a tendency to blush. Women are more likely to contract the disease, though men typically develop more serious symptoms. The disease is not thought to be infectious. It may be hereditary, and may be related to racial origin.
Associations have also been made with certain lifestyle practices. Consuming hot drinks, caffeine, spicy food, and alcohol is thought to aggravate the symptoms of the disease. Exposure to the sun may have negative effects. And the use of facial cosmetic products may contribute to the progression of rosacea. |
